MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF MONDAY, AUGUST 19
12:15 p.m.
The Pond House Café

Present:  26 Great Rotarians; four visiting Rotarians

Christine Looby gave the invocation, “For a Leader,” from John O’Donohue’s To Bless the Space between Us, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  During lunch, Hap Leabman began the meeting with announcements:

The Leadership Institute will take place November 2 at Middlesex Community College from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m..  For more information or to register, visit http://www.rlinea.com

All are invited to a beer tasting/fund raiser at The Noah Webster House Thursday, August 22.

The Club provided $500 to the Hartford Backpack Project.  Our dollars funded crayons, pencils, notebooks and other school supplies for Hartford children.  The Glastonbury Club will fill the backpacks Saturday, August 24 at 9:30 a.m.  They will be distributed on Tuesday, August 27; those interested in joining Hap and Polly Hincks for this should call Hap.

We also contributed to a backpack-filling project for West Hartford schoolchildren; those knapsacks will be doled out on the evening of Tuesday, August 27.

Cindy Lang reminded Club members that Lobsterfest will take place September 7 on the grounds of the American School for the Deaf.  Please let Cindy know what you’ve sold and return ticket stubs to her.  We still need people to sign up for assignments – especially for clean-up on Sunday.

Kyle Egress reported that we have brought in $4600 in sponsorships and encouraged each member to give what they could to the cause.  In a special way, he appealed to those Club members who are unable to be present on September 7 to demonstrate support by making a donation to “Claws for a Cause.”

Sargeant at Arms Todd Bower reported that 26 Rotarians and four visiting Rotarians were present.  Annie and Steve Keith are celebrating an anniversary this week, as are Rob and Joanne Claflin.  Todd Bower is celebrating his second year anniversary as a Rotarian.  Happy dollars were contributed by several members, including Rob Claflin, Dave Lemkuil, Dana Gordon, Tony Rodriguez, Elizabeth Horyn, Oscar Santo Domingo, Hap Leabman and Don Chandler.

Frank Wargo, a member of the New Milford Rotary Club, Paul Harris Society Chair and District Governor from 2000-2001, discussed the importance of making sure that the good we do as Rotarians is sustainable.  He urged us not to speak in statistics, but to follow his example of telling stories about the children, adults and families we serve and support.

The meeting adjourned at 1:28 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Christine M. Looby
