Lizzy Givan was our guest speaker May 15th
Lizzy Givan of the American Cancer Society was our guest speaker today, May 15th.
I guess the subtitle for Lizzy’s talk would be focused about all of the changes in Cancer treatment and the American Cancer Society (ACS).
While the ACS still funds a ton of research, it has greatly expanded its volunteer services and initiatives.
Almost all of this is documented on the ACS site, Cancer.org. On that site are communities, forums and a full time chat capability.
Some of the latest ACS programs include:
- The Road to Recovery: A free transportation program for those under treatment, app based. Volunteers are welcome!
- Hope Lodge – In New England are two lodges, one in Boston and one in Burlington. This is a hotel to stay in while undergoing treatment.
- Reach for Recovery – Support and an app for Breast Cancer patients.
- Cancer Survivors network
- Community Events – including the Farmington CT ‘Relay for Life’ which is the third largest in the U.S. (May20-21, 2023)
- Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – October 15th at Dunkin’ Stadium
- Golf Tournament at Tunxis CC
- Patient Navigators – helper who are there to guide patients through all of the options that are available to them.
And Kudos to Lizzy for juggling her job, her three kids and a change of venue for our meeting.
